Further Steps Towards Our Campuses Reopening

I hope this letter finds you well, and that you have enjoyed having a few more freedoms to see friends and family across the weekend. This letter contains broad details of the process and a timeline involved for us to reopen Woodleigh School safely and efficiently; with further campus-specific detail to be provided soon by the Heads of Campus.

A Pragmatic Approach to Distancing

As educators, we understand that it's not possible, particularly in the Primary Years, to apply the same physical distancing conditions to students, as we do adults. However, we will practice physical distancing as much as possible and continue to encourage the hygiene practices recommended by health authorities. 

We will allocate specific Year levels to different play areas within each campus during breaks and have initiated protocols to ensure that high-touch surfaces (door handles, light switches, phones and tables) will be cleaned regularly. Toilets will be cleaned regularly, and children will be asked to wash hands on arrival, before and after eating, and after breaks. A significant change in Junior (ECC-Year2) classrooms will be that all students will need to bring an individual pencil case as we will be removing shared stationery items from classrooms. 

During this initial phase, drinking taps have been turned off, and campus canteens will not be operating. We ask students to bring adequate water and food with them each day. We will be instructing students that in no circumstances are they to share food or water bottles. 

Key Dates for Reopening

Friday 22 May

Asynchronous Learning (No zoom lessons) 

  • Students will have asynchronous work set on this day to allow staff to complete an online induction program before they re-enter Woodleigh Campuses.

Monday 25 May

Student Free Day 

  • Staff will attend campus to set up learning areas to ensure a safe, distanced environment and to familiarise themselves with the newly introduced safe working procedures.
  • Students in Years 10-12 and their parents will be required to read safety information before re-entering the Senior Campus. 

Tuesday 26 May

ECC-Y2 Return to School

The protocols around student drop-off vary significantly between the Minimbah and Penbank Campuses. Full detail will be provided by Rod Davies and Vivienne Wearne later this week. Please note that normal buses will be running.

Years 11-12 to Return to School

  • Students will be dropped off or arrive via bus. 
  • Students will move immediately to the Senior Homestead. 
  • Year 10 students completing a VCE study will arrive and move straight to Homestead 1. 
  • Year 10 students will be able to work in Homestead 1 throughout the day to ensure they can attend their VCE classes. They may choose to return home once their lesson is complete.
  • Parents are asked to remain in their cars at Senior Campus. 

Friday 5 June

Years 3-10 Asynchronous (No zoom lessons) Day  

  • Students in Years 3-10 and their parents will be required to read safety information  before re-entering the School. Details will be communicated in the week before. 
  • Foundation/Prep-Year 2 students will have classes on campus. 
  • Year 11 and 12 students will attend a wellbeing workshop on this day. 

Monday 8 June

Queen's Birthday Holiday

Tuesday 9 June

All Students to Attend Each Campus 

  • Full detail regarding drop off and pick up times will be made available to families in the week before students return to School.

In the Case of Illness

As part of our partnership with families, we ask that any student who shows even slight symptoms of COVID-19 should not attend school. Symptoms include any one or a combination of fever, cough, sore throat or sniffly nose. Students who show symptoms and are excluded from school are strongly encouraged to be tested for COVID-19 before returning to campus. If a student develops symptoms during the day, they will be isolated immediately, and parents will be required to pick them up ASAP and arrange for a test. 

Parents will be required to complete a weekly declaration, via Caremonkey confirming that their child(ren) do not have any symptoms and have had no contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases. Our protocols for reopening the School have been informed by advice from the State Government and also the AHCCP. 

Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews

At the end of this semester, we will be providing parents with student progress reports for Semester One. Due to the broader changes to the teaching and learning environment brought about by the spread of COVID19, we have made some modifications to our normal assessment and reporting processes. The Semester One report will contain assessments of student achievement against the Achievement Standards set out in the Victorian Curriculum. The reports will also feature a pastoral comment from your child’s classroom teacher or tutor, focused on engagement with the Continuous Learning Plan. We will not be including individual comments from each subject teacher in this cycle of reporting, in recognition of the disruption to our normal assessment and reporting practices. At the start of next term, teachers from ECC to Year 11 will be conducting Parent-Teacher interviews via phone. Parents with children in Year 12 will be invited to engage with Parent-Teacher Interviews via phone later this term. Further information about the interviews will be made available to parents in coming weeks.

While the prospect of having students and staff back on campus is something I eagerly await, I am very mindful of our School's responsibility to provide a safe space for all to work and study in.
