Sport News

Term 2 has been a busy one for our Senior Campus sports students. We have 12 teams competing weekly in the Winter Season competitions at FDBA Basketball and FDNA Netball. Nine teams are competing in the Term 2 SIS Weekly Sports competitions across various sports, including AFL, Indoor Cricket, Volleyball, and Touch Rugby. We have competed in the SIS Swimming Carnival at MSAC, held our Homestead Cross Country Carnival and competed in the SIS Cross Country competition at Baxter Park. We've had students compete in the VSAC Swimming competition and the Vic College Basketball Championships.

SIS Swimming Carnival

Division A SIS Swimming Carnival took place on Tuesday 27 April at MSAC, in Albert Park. Last year was very limiting for all swimmers, with the ability to train hampered by COVID restrictions. It was fantastic to see students put their hand up to compete in this competition despite feeling a bit overwhelmed about returning to competitive swimming. Our swimmers were terrific. We filled all events on the program and produced a super consistent performance, finishing with 36 top 3 finishes across the 84 events. Standout performances on the day Ethan Bam taking out 1st place in U/17 Boys Backstroke and Chris DavisBenny McConnellTom Lewis and Ethan Bam securing 1st place in Senior Boys 4 x 50m Medley Relay. The contribution of all our competitors pushed us up into 3rd position overall—a massive achievement for a small school competing in Division A.

Thank you to our Year 12 students who competed on the day and have made a solid contribution to our swimming program over their time at Woodleigh – Liv Marshall (Captain), Chris Davis (Captain), Tom LewisAmber Cooper and Charlotte Swayn.

Congratulations to Ethan Bam and Benny McConnell, being selected to represent the SIS at the VSAC Swimming competition held at MSAC on 10th May. Ethan swam a PB at this event.

Homestead Cross Country

After missing out on this event last year, it was great to have the Homestead Cross Country back for 2021. The carnival took place on Tuesday 11 May here at Woodleigh, and the course was in excellent condition. Cross Country is a challenging event that tests us. When the legs have had enough, we rely on our heart to get us to the finish line. To all of the students who challenged themselves and did their best on the day – congratulations! You should be proud of the resilience that you showed and the contribution that you made to your Homestead.

For both our Year 7's and 8's, this was their first time competing in this event. This event is an optional one for our Year 11 & 12 students, and this year we had just over 20 students come out and have a run during their lunchtime, setting an excellent example for the Junior Homestead students. Homestead 3 had been unbeaten in the Homestead Cross Country carnival since 2010, but Homestead 6 were victorious at this year's event. Well done to Mr Higgins and Homestead 6!

Vic College Basketball Championships

The Vic College Championships are an open competition for all secondary schools throughout the state, with a series of qualifying days leading to a finals day at the State Basketball Centre with all regional winners attending. After the cancellation of the regional day at Frankston, our Senior Boys' teams headed over to Keilor for their qualifying day. Division 1 and Division 2 teams both competed. Points allocated to players depending on the level of Basketball. Our Division 1 team consisting of Asher MagreeTom LewisBen FewsterLachie MarshallJacomo Dwyer-MorrisNick GordonJoel Quick and Aidan Bolch played some great Basketball. Across the day, they overcame St Monica's College, Maribyrnong College and Manor Lakes with a 2 point Grand Final victory and earned a place in the State Finals being held at the State Basketball Centre on 15 June. It's the first time we have made a Division 1 Finals day at this event. A massive effort, and we wish them well for the upcoming finals series.

Well done also to Noah BarnesSeb ClearyZac NelsonRex ThorpeSeb GinsbergIlan Umansky and John Faulkner, representing Woodleigh with great spirit in the Division 2 competition.

The Intermediate Boys team competed at Frankston in the Division 2 competition on 20 May. The team moved the ball well all day and had a height advantage which they used to their advantage. Entering the Grand Final, we were undefeated and were confident of progressing to the State Finals. Things didn't click for us in the final, and we went down narrowly (3 points) to Berwick Grammar. This team remains in the running for a wildcard entry into the State Finals. Well done to Max McGowanJohn GoslingRory GodingBrayden StewartTadgh FeehelyJacob BamLachie Swayn and Mackenzie Kelton.
