The 3 Rs at Woodleigh – Values to live by

At Woodleigh we have an essential faith in young people, a positive expectation that in most situations good will emerge. We strive to avoid unnecessary confrontation with students, instead endeavouring to work restoratively with respect, cooperation and good-will.

The 3 Rs at Woodleigh School act as guidelines for student behaviour in all areas of school life. They assist children and young adults to become independent members of the Woodleigh community, who are able to show initiative and take responsibility for themselves. Rather than applying a long list of rules, and punitive disciplinary measures, at Woodleigh School, students are encouraged to apply the 3 Rs to any situation they may come across at school. For example:

RESPECT FOR SELF

Means doing your best, or in other words, not letting yourself down. For example:

  • Making the best use of class time.
  • Being prepared to seek help from teachers.
  • Completing work by due dates.
  • Coming to class on time and well-prepared (eg. with your Student Planner, correct books, macbook & equipment).
  • Planning homework tasks ahead of time (eg. using your Study Planner effectively).
  • Being a willing participant in other areas of school life.
  • Taking every opportunity offered to you in Homestead and on Activities Week.
  • Aiming to keep physically fit including exercise and diet.
  • Taking responsibility for your personal organisation.
  • Trying new, different and challenging Activities.
  • Clothing – buying and cleaning.
  • Making your own lunch.
  • Coming to school on time, including having a good breakfast.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS

Means always respecting other people’s needs, feelings and opinions. For example:

  • Allowing others to do their best in class.
  • Listening to others in turn.
  • Allowing others to contribute – in class as well as other areas of school life.
  • Valuing others’ contributions.
  • Being considerate of others’ feelings.
  • Respecting others’ property.
  • Valuing others’ achievements.
  • Accepting difference and celebrating the diversity in our community. Diversity and difference of race, religion, gender, sexual preference, personal style and ability.

RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Refers to the school, the community and the world environment. For example:

• Keeping the school grounds free from litter.
• Caring for classrooms, Homestead and School gardens and bushland.
• Conserving resources, including recycling.
• Participating in environmental care activities, both at school and in the local community.
• Being aware of global environmental needs, including being prepared to take action where possible.

Common sense, awareness and empathy are the key attributes Woodleigh students must display and develop in order to make the most of the opportunities their time at this school affords them.
