An update on Woodleigh School's Continuous Learning Program

Dear Woodleigh families,

Greetings in these strange times – I write to you to offer an update regarding the School's operation and our continued response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Your continued support is most appreciated

Firstly, I would like to thank you, the Woodleigh Community, for your continued support of our School and your patience as we work through this crisis together. It has been difficult for everyone, and I’m sure we would all like to have the students back at School ASAP. The past six weeks have been an incredibly challenging time, particularly for those parents with younger children.

Our teachers are amazing

To our teachers and our non-teaching staff; your ability to manage the move to Phase 2 of the Continuous Learning Plan has been exemplary. There have been many challenges, and much to learn in a short time, but you have adapted, and led positively from the front. I have been very fortunate to sit in on a multitude of zoom lessons and have been impressed at how hard everyone is working to engage and learn to the best of their ability. I commend our team for their superb efforts and positivity. Special thanks to David Burton for again stepping into the Acting Principal role during my time away.

When will we back?

That, as they say, is the million-dollar question. At this stage, we will continue to follow the advice of the Victorian Government and wait until we receive instructions regarding when and how to reopen each campus.

Our Premier has taken a strong and very safe line concerning reopening school campuses, and we will prudently assess his advice if and when it is given. I feel we will know more on Monday and hope to be able to communicate more news regarding a reopening next week.

How we will open?

The opening of the School will be just as challenging as moving to the CLP. We may need to navigate an interim, partial opening while mitigating the risk to our community with extensive protocols for staff and students. We are currently in the process of preparing these protocols for the third phase of the Continuous Learning Plan, a partial opening and Phase 4, being the full opening of the School.

Our decision making is strongly guided by the AHCCP (Australian Health Protection Principal Committee) and Safe Work. We are very conscious of our responsibility to provide a safe learning environment for students and staff, and we will need your assistance to implement some of these protocols.

If and when we open, we will need to remain prepared for the possibility of a Campus or School closure, in the event of a positive case within the community. We will also need to prepare for the possibility that the State Government may revert to a lockdown situation, should the curve steepen. In each case, we would move back to CLP2 and continue to work from home.

Keep the lines of communication open

In the interim, we would greatly value your feedback regarding the current phase of the Continuous Learning Plan. Your children have already provided some feedback, and we would love to hear from you regarding how effective the Continuous Learning Plan has been in your home.

We realise that the online environment is not an ideal ground for learning. We also understand that for many of our students, this period has been particularly challenging and stressful. You can help us to improve CLP2 by completing this short survey. It will assist us in fine-tuning our current practices and also assist in the preparations for implementing phases 3 and 4 of the Continuous Learning Plan.

Thank you for continuing to work in partnership with us over the past six weeks – your support and patience have been remarkable. I wish all the Woodleigh Mums, Grandmothers and special friends my very best for Mother’s Day on Sunday, and I look forward to meeting you in person when we are able.

Stay safe, stay connected,

DAVID BAKER
