Foundation Update

Welcome to your child's first year of formal schooling. I am looking forward to forming a strong partnership with you this term to help your child strive to reach their full potential. The first year of school is exciting, full of emotion, growth, and friendship. I am so excited to be your child's first Primary School teacher!

It was beautiful to see so many of you at our Parent Information Night and to share more about our plans and expectations for this term. I thought it might be helpful to elaborate on our focus for each curriculum area this term.

Next week we will begin learning our Speed Sounds in 'Read Write Inc' time. The children will learn to recognise and write a new letter each day. Our focus will be listening and responding to shared texts by answering oral questions and making predictions about what we are reading during reading time. We will be reading lots of picture storybooks related to our central idea and concepts for our Unit of Inquiry. If your child has any books that they would like to bring in to share with us that focus on identity, relationships or emotions, that would be wonderful. Our oral language focus will be to listen respectfully and take turns during conversations and class discussions. We are encouraging the children to listen actively and be able to express their ideas confidently. If your child wants to bring an item in for 'Show and Share' time on Monday afternoon, that would be great. Photos, things that they have made, or any item connected to our Unit of inquiry would be perfect. Feel free to email photos to me, and then your child can share them with the class on the 'big board.'

This term during Maths, we will be focusing on the following;

  • naming, describing, and writing numbers
  • counting and recognising quantities
  • modelling and representing quantities
  • using the language of time to describe events
  • sequencing events
  • collecting information
  • describing and explaining the information we collect

Unit of Inquiry

Our Unit of Inquiry this term is about helping the children feel known, appreciated, and connected to their new community. Our central idea for this Unit is, 'Exploring personal identity helps us understand and build relationships with others.' We will continue to work on this Unit throughout the term and explore relationships, belonging, identity, rights and responsibilities, and emotions. Our lines of inquiry for this Unit are;

  • Our personal identities
  • How we build relationships
  • Ways our actions can affect others

This is a perfect unit to begin our year with as it helps the children understand the social and emotional concepts that build self-esteem, friendship, and a sense of belonging in our classroom community. I am looking forward to the children sharing their 'All About Me' bags this week to learn more about who they are. Throughout the term, we will have many opportunities to reflect on the skills required to build relationships with others and build friendships.

  • Our Creek Program (Discovery Day) will begin on 17th February. If you would like to sign up to come to the creek with us on a Wednesday, please let me know. The children will all bring home their Puddle Suits on Tuesday, 16th February.
  • Please make sure everything that your child brings to school is named to help us return lost items to them. This is important for hats, jumpers, water bottles, and lunch boxes.
  • The Foundation children can continue being dropped off at Reception this week, and then we will begin using the Basketball Court as our drop off point from Monday, 15th February.
  • As we begin our full days this week if you feel your child is exhausted and needs a rest day at any stage, please just let me know via email.

I will begin posting photos on our class Seesaw page this week. If you don't already have your child's login details for Seesaw, we will send them home on Monday.

Thank you for having your children so well prepared for school. They have all got off to a great start!
