Year 1 Update

Well, it has undoubtedly been a once in a lifetime kind of a term. The children have continued to work and achieve beautifully at home with the support of their families. It has been a pleasure and a delight to see them every morning on the screen, ready to face the day with a positive attitude. I am so very proud of their achievements.

I look forward to being back together in our classroom, but for now, we have two weeks remaining of Term 3, and boy, what a busy term it has been.

This week will see us tie up any loose ends from our current Sharing the Planet inquiry around the central idea – People use Earth's resources with varying impact. It has been an inquiry into;

  • Earth's resources (renewable/non-renewable)
  • The effect of people's use of Earth's resources
  • How we can contribute to the conservation of Earth's resources.

The children have eagerly participated in this inquiry and have demonstrated a sound understanding of the concepts explored. This week the children will use what they have learned in creating a sustainable home, which includes renewable and non-renewable resources.

Next week, we will begin our new inquiry exploring the central idea - Curating historical sources gives insight into the past stories. Our lines of inquiry will be -

  • Historical sources and what they convey about the past
  • How the past has shaped our family today
  • Curating historical sources to tell stories about the past.

Literacy this term has included exploring the structure and language of persuasive and procedural writing. The children have completed tasks that have developed their skills in writing and reading both styles. They have also continued to work in their RWInc, MiniLit, and Literacy groups to expand their knowledge and understanding of phonemes, spelling choices, and literacy conventions. Recent RWInc. Testing has demonstrated sound improvements in all children. This is a credit to their commitment and your contributions, ensuring the children are connected and participating in the current online approach.

Within our Numeracy sessions, we have been developing skills in number (place value and counting), multiplication and division strategies, problem-solving, and mapping. Over the next two weeks, we will complete activities that will explore the characteristics and use of 2D and 3D shapes.

The children have also created collages of what makes them happy.

Thank you all so much for your continued support of the Continuous Learning Program.

Happy Father's Day to all of our Dads and Grandpas. I hope you have a fantastic day with your children.

See you in Zoom!
